I have always wanted to, or at least have pictured myself being in a situation where I am stuck or stranded somewhere for some time with random people and then we all become close and tell stories and become friends. Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to be in any danger or not comfortable or starving or anything, but just somewhere where strangers become friends.
This exact thing has happened to 183 passengers on board an Amtrak train in Oregon, heading to Los Angeles. The train hit a fallen tree, and due to extreme weather and worsening conditions, there is no way to get alternate transportation for these people or even get the train to move.
The train company is not charging for any extra food the people on the train eat (I wouldn’t even question it). The passengers and workers have been stuck on the train for over 24 hours, since last Sunday. The cellphone reception hasn’t been the best, so it is difficult for some people to get in contact with their families.
Customers have talked about how the whole thing is like a giant “kumbaya party” teenagers taking care of younger kids, kids they don’t even know. People dancing and talking together that have never met. Everyone is together as one, all differences set aside for the moment, almost as if there is no confrontation in the world. This is what I love, people becoming friends, because they can’t go anywhere, right now they are stranded, so why not make the best of it.
